Taking Out the Trash

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 7:40pm

What we almost missed today...

Is Newt Gingrich coming around to the NYT? First line of his most recent column from Human Events: "I'm beginning this week by doing something I don’t usually do: thanking the New York Times."

CNN's Jack Cafferty admits a crush on First Lady Michelle Obama here, calling her "utterly fascinating."

President Obama named Julius Genachowski as his nominee for Federal Communications Commission chairman today.

Washingtonian has a timeline of the Chandra Levy news story, culminating today in the arrest of Ingmar Guandique.

Rush Limbaugh: "Ed, You're A Butt Boy"

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 7:00pm

Rush Limbaugh says he's "exploding with reaction" at this phrase, "the president has spoken a lot about bringing the country together," in a question from CNN's Ed Henry at today's daily press briefing at the White House. "Ed, you're a butt boy" follows.

Rush does have some compliments to give- "Jake Tapper is the one guy that's outside of the butt boy bubble in the White House press room," he says.

Weingarten: Drugged, Not Dead

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 5:46pm

Internal memo from WaPo funnyman Gene Weingarten:

Gene Weingarten has authorized ALL NEWS distribution of the following statement:

If you are receiving this message, I am resting comfortably at George Washington University Hospital after double knee replacement surgery. If you have not received this message, I died during surgery, and the message you received instead was maudlin and -- as these things tend to be -- filled with embarrassing exaggerations of my accomplishments, as well as outright lies about the strength of my character, my importance to the newspaper, and the inspiration I have been to others.

If that happened, apologize.

By "resting comfortably" I mean "under the influence of narcotics administered in doses large enough to sedate a mature horse." This condition will last through tomorrow morning, at which point I plan to begin a strict regimen of self-pity, accompanied by cantankerousness. This will last four days. Visits during this period are discouraged. This is because my behavior will resemble that of an enraged ape. If I have it at hand, I will fling feces.

Thank you.

Congressman Polis Says Bloggers Killed the Rocky Mountain News, and That It Isn't a Bad Thing

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 5:31pm

Yeah, we've never heard of him either and we're not sure this is how you want to make a name for yourself, but the freshman Congressman from Colorado blamed the blogosphere for the "demise" of traditional journalism- for the better.

Rep. Jared Polis is quoted by the Denver Post, "Who killed the Rocky Mountain News? We're all part of it, for better or worse, and I argue it's mostly for the better... The media is dead and long live the new media."

At Today's Press Briefing...

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 5:15pm

Commenting on RNC Chairman Michael Steele's apology to Rush Limbaugh, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs had this to say at today's press briefing:

"I was a little surprised by the speed in which Mr. Steele, the head of the RNC, apologized to the head of the Republican Party."

TVNewser also points out- Gibbs knocked CNBC's Jim Cramer for calling President Obama's budget the "greatest wealth destruction by a president" on this morning's Today Show.

"I'm not entirely sure what he's pointing to to make some of the statements... And you can go back and look at any number of statements he's made in the past about the economy and wonder where some of the back-up for those are too," Gibbs responded to a question posed by NBC's Tom Costello on duty at the WH.

WaPo Guild: A Reporter by Any Other Name...

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 2:41pm

MediaJobsDaily reports that Jay Kennedy, VP of labor at WaPo, sent the Post's guild a letter suggesting the creation of a new role - "community journo."

"primary focus of this position will be to report on stories of local and community interest for the Extras and to perform multimedia work; employees in this position may also report for the daily paper."

In addition, the letter says:

"community journalists should not be expected to be promoted to "reporter," and the base salary would start at $653 per week, or $34,000 a year."

The Post Guild responded that the new gig "sounds a lot like the positions we already have...for a lower wage."

Washingtonian Takes On the "New Brain Trust"

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 1:56pm

Harry Jaffe over at Washingtonian magazine ranks what he calls WaPo's "new brain trust." On a scale of one to ten, he had reporters and editors rank their new leaders.

The ladies, Katharine Weymouth and Liz Spayd, take the cake in this contest, out ranking Marcus Brauchli and Raju Narisetti with scores of 8 and 9, respectively.

Katharine Weymouth: Even as she delivers the news that the Post must shave $85 million in costs, the young publisher gets high marks for being calm, steady, and forthright. Also pretty hip and approachable. Rating: 8

Marcus Brauchli: As executive editor for six months, he has yet to establish a real presence in either the print or the Web-site newsroom. Reporters call him the Ghost. At lunches with reporters, he seems "disengaged" and consumed with his BlackBerry. Rating: 6

Liz Spayd: She has lots of cred in both newsrooms. She's the only top editor who came up through the Post and appreciates the culture. As one of two managing editors, she's been in the downtown-DC newsroom, putting out the newspaper and directing coverage on Washingtonpost.com. Rating: 9

Raju Narisetti: Only a month on the job, he got off to a rough start. He worked with Brauchli at the Wall Street Journal, launched a newspaper in India, and now shares the managing-editor title with Spayd. Posties say it’s Narisetti's job to cut staff at Washingtonpost.com. After an all-hands staff meeting, he stepped into an elevator with eight of his staff members. They expected him to chat; he never looked up from his BlackBerry. Rating: 3

Supreme Court to Hear Freelancer Copyright Case

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 12:15pm

Publishing giants Reed Elsevier, NYT, Thomson Reuters, News Corp's Dow Jones & Co, and Knight Ridder were granted an appeal by the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday. The case involves a nearly $18 million copyright settlement that the publishers reached with freelance journos in 2005.

The epic battle that began in 2001 started when a group of writers sued the publishers and a number of online databases, stating that their contracts did not allow for the online distribution and electronic archival of their work.

Reuter reports that arguments in the case will begin in October.

Morning Reading List 03.03.09

Tue, 03/03/2009 - 8:21am

Good Morning FishbowlDC!

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line or let us know in the tips box below.

Its day 43 covering the Obama administration and one month down for us. Happy Birthday to Patrick Gavin.

What we know and what we're reading this Tuesday morning...

NEWSPAPERS | TV | RADIO | ONLINE | NEWS NOTES | JOBS

NEWPAPERS

WaPo tops Fortune's most admired companies 2009 list in the publishing, newspapers and magazines industry. NYTimes follows.

More on George Will's column on global warming and omsbudsman Andrew Alexander's response on a science blog The Loom, "When Fact-Checking Is Not Fact-Checking."

Future "health czar" Nancy-Ann DeParle is married to NYT reporter Jason DeParle, the paper disclosed yesterday. Jason does not cover healthcare and Politico reports Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet does not foresee any issue, saying DeParle is "one of the most important people in the bureau."

A look at the future of newspapers, "What Comes After a Golden Age," including five reasons why the death of print is not impending.

TV

TVNewser wants to know "Where are TV's Women Chief White House Correspondents?" All the major TV nets and cablers- ABC, CBS, NBC/MSNBC, CNN, FNC -have male Chief White House Correspondents. Is this significant? Sam Donaldson thinks "it's a big deal," Ann Compton calls it "a quirk of the moment," and Andrea Mitchell finds it "unusual."

Media Matters asks, "Matthews' 'Oh God' vs. Santelli's rant: Which told us more about the press?" "...the idea that the [Chris] Matthews live-mic moment should be pounced on as an "aha" moment for the unprofessional press corps is absurd. Not when Rick Santelli, a reporter for CNBC, went on live TV and uncorked an anti-Obama rant and then paraded around on right-wing radio shows for days while concocting stories about being targeted by the White House. Despite crossing all normal bounds of journalism, Santelli was celebrated in the press as a populist... And CNBC seemed to do everything it could to market and hype the rant."

NY Magazine calls ABC's Jake Tapper a tool here.

RADIO

In today's Media Notes, Howard Kurtz contends the "White House Lets Rush Limbaugh Be Voice of GOP Opposition." He calls Limbaugh a "master at drawing media attention," filling a vacuum in the Republican party since the election.

ONLINE

A discussion on fair use from the NYT here. Copyright and infringement cases against bloggers and online publishers seem to be increasing. An interesting quote from Arianna Huffington, "we are at the beginning of developing the rules of the road" online and Times piece says she said the site’s editors were "constantly talking" about appropriate excerpting conduct.

NEWS NOTES

From Newsweek, "Confessions Of A Pundit, Economic commentators may be insightful, but they're not neutral. Market forces shape their views."

In an interview with ABC's Jonathan Karl former First Lady Laura Bush commented that she wasn't getting her newspaper on time in the morning. It's actually security that's the problem, not her hometown paper, the Dallas Morning News. The paper's publisher and chief executive tells Dallas News, "Because the police won't let anyone past the roadblock near the Bush Dallas residence without security clearance, we leave the paper with the police guards near the house bright and early every morning."

Taking Out the Trash

Mon, 03/02/2009 - 7:43pm

What we almost missed today...

Senator Kudlow? Maybe... CNBC anchor and syndicated columnist Larry Kudlow is considering a run for Senate against Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), telling Politico, "I'm thinking about it, that's all I can say... it's the kind of thing where I'm talking to friends, talking to strategists, talking to my wife, and praying on it... It's all come on very fast, and I don't have any definite thoughts at all other than the fact that I am thinking about it." You remember similar speculation about MSNBC's Chris Matthews and most recently, Joe Scarborough.

Rod Blagojevich may not have a job, but who needs one with a six-figure book deal lined up, right? The terms of the book deal with Beverly Hills-based Phoenix Books, one of the largest independent book publishers in the U.S., have not been disclosed in a release, but we do know that the book has a working title of "The Governor" and is set to be released in October. He will supposedly write about the discussions, the considerations, and the factors involved in picking President Barack Obama's successor to the U.S. Senate. The Sun-Times reports Blagojevich may not see a dime of it under a law now being considered.

Taking Out the Trash

Fri, 02/27/2009 - 7:44pm

What we almost missed today...

Editor & Publisher has its annual Pulitzer preview up- "Two Washington Post series in the running include Debbie Cenziper and Sara Cohen's "Forced Out" investigation that revealed how local landlords drove tenants from rent-controlled apartments. It is a Goldsmith finalist. There is also the paper's 12-part series on Chandra Levy, which many believe prompted the recent attention on a suspect named in the report. If he is charged, look for the jurors to take note."

Who leaves the oldest show in television for the newest? Michelle Jaconi, who tells friends in an email today "CNN wooed me with an offer I couldn't refuse-- including creative control of a show that is going to change my favorite political institution, the Sunday morning public affairs program." Her email after the jump...

Fri, 02/27/2009 - 6:37pm

CBS' Kimberly Dozier was Carol Joynt's latest guest for "The Q&A Cafe" at Nathans in Georgetown. The show airs tonight at 8pm on DC Cable-TV 16. They discussed her book "Breathing the Fire" and her near-death experience covering the war in Iraq.

We chatted with Kimberly- "After making you comfortable on a barstool at Nathans, Carol asks VERY direct, take-no-prisoners questions, like why isn't there more news coverage of Iraq and Afghanistan, and how big is the network bureau presence in Iraq and Afghanistan." She was also quite taken by the dessert- Georgetown cupcakes.
