Weingarten: Drugged, Not Dead

Media Bistro: Fishbowl DC - Tue, 03/03/2009 - 5:46pm

Internal memo from WaPo funnyman Gene Weingarten:

Gene Weingarten has authorized ALL NEWS distribution of the following statement:

If you are receiving this message, I am resting comfortably at George Washington University Hospital after double knee replacement surgery. If you have not received this message, I died during surgery, and the message you received instead was maudlin and -- as these things tend to be -- filled with embarrassing exaggerations of my accomplishments, as well as outright lies about the strength of my character, my importance to the newspaper, and the inspiration I have been to others.

If that happened, apologize.

By "resting comfortably" I mean "under the influence of narcotics administered in doses large enough to sedate a mature horse." This condition will last through tomorrow morning, at which point I plan to begin a strict regimen of self-pity, accompanied by cantankerousness. This will last four days. Visits during this period are discouraged. This is because my behavior will resemble that of an enraged ape. If I have it at hand, I will fling feces.

Thank you.

Media Bistro: Fishbowl DC - Tue, 03/03/2009 - 5:31pm

Yeah, we've never heard of him either and we're not sure this is how you want to make a name for yourself, but the freshman Congressman from Colorado blamed the blogosphere for the "demise" of traditional journalism- for the better.

Rep. Jared Polis is quoted by the Denver Post, "Who killed the Rocky Mountain News? We're all part of it, for better or worse, and I argue it's mostly for the better... The media is dead and long live the new media."

At Today's Press Briefing...

Media Bistro: Fishbowl DC - Tue, 03/03/2009 - 5:15pm

Commenting on RNC Chairman Michael Steele's apology to Rush Limbaugh, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs had this to say at today's press briefing:

"I was a little surprised by the speed in which Mr. Steele, the head of the RNC, apologized to the head of the Republican Party."

TVNewser also points out- Gibbs knocked CNBC's Jim Cramer for calling President Obama's budget the "greatest wealth destruction by a president" on this morning's Today Show.

"I'm not entirely sure what he's pointing to to make some of the statements... And you can go back and look at any number of statements he's made in the past about the economy and wonder where some of the back-up for those are too," Gibbs responded to a question posed by NBC's Tom Costello on duty at the WH.
